The Work Experience
10th Semester, Bachelor of Architecture
Interaction is accepted as intersection between users and devices.
In the field of architecture, this includes an attention on the physical environment, as well as a concern to human activities, flows and information exchange. Thermodynamic architecture attempts to revise the contemporary design method and evaluation system to reflect the lack of consideration of the factors of climate and environment. Hence by extracting the prototype from the nature we learn how termites interact with the climate.
The building tries to deal with the extreme climate in Chennai to optimize the user experience with its resilient facade and form.
From termite mound to Architecture
Termite mound has been taken as a typical sample of biological adaptability. One advantage of its structure is the efficient use of building effort to achieve good passive ventilation and constant internal temperature. No matter how frequent and drastic the external temperature changes, the temperature inside the is stable. The interior has a complex branch-like structure which extend upward, connecting with the opening on the surface. The underground part has many thin orifice reaching to the deep underground. The process of adjusting the interior temperature and humidity can be concluded as 6 mechanisms, which are obtain, converge, conversion, convection, storage and output. This is how termites interact with the external environment. Based on the studies, architecture is able to interact with the environment by exchange of energy like the termite mounds. The natural environment provides the architecture with sunlight, heat and air, allowing it to react properly as a thermodynamic prototype with its form and resilient energy conversion.
